A bit of history
| A map in Latin, dating back to May 26th 1324, tells us that the vicar of the Ouveillan church and a beneficiary of the church of Saint-Paul in Narbonne, limited the utilisation rights for the Bastide de Ramnar (Capitoul), in the’ l‘isle del Lec’ (La Clape), due to the frequent flooding of the river Aude, which rendered the grounds and vineyards marshy. This is the first official mention of wine growing in Capitoul. |

On December 22nd, 1423, a judgement passed between the Chapter and 5 Consuls of Narbonne, declared that the Bastide de Rieumar, also called Official should be the property of the Chapter of the Saint-Just Cathedral, who alone had the banderage, forestry, grazing and watering rights. The origin of Capitoul therefore comes from the etymology of Chapitre, Capitulare, Capitulum, reminding us of the past ownership of the Canons of the Saint-Just Cathedral in Narbonne. |

The construction of the present Chateau dates back to the end
of the 19th century.
Charles Mock took
over management of the domain in 1983 on a site with a centuries-old wine
growing culture. He is the 4th generation of winegrowers after his
great-grandfather, Jean-Marie AUPECLE, originally from Algeria, bought the
property in 1927. During the period from 1962 to 1983 his uncle managed the
Domain. |

The soil here at Capitoul is called 'puddingstone' - a combination of stones, clay, and limestone.
