Natacha and Alain Quenehen

We come from Paris where, for many years, we were respectively a fashion designer and development manager. We were already passionate wine lovers, and came to feel we'd like to make wine, as we love it, allying power an elegance, originality and convivial warmth. To raise the funds to buy Borde-Rouge we set up G.F.A. (a shareholding arrangement for agricultural land created by the French Government), calling on our own network of friends and contacts. 33 responded, and each year receive their profits in wine, according to their investment.

Olivier Fouquet is the cellar master and vineyard manager. From northwest France, with a degree in oenology and viticulture, he is representative of a new generation, a nature lover committed to integrity and a respect for the environment.

Our consultant oenologist, Pierre Roque, has several of the region's foremost estates on his books. An agronomist and agricultural engineer, her understands the 'raw material' through and through, knowing how to enhance its potential to the utmost. As an oenologist, he tends to trust more in his nose and taste buds rather than the test tube and chemical formulas - one of the old school, a believer in the 'naturally authentic'.

These two colleagues, along with ourselves and the regular season staff, make up a team in which each has his or her role to play, working with the same commitment to genuine quality.

The Vineyards.

There are three white grape varieties (Grenache, Maccabeu and Clairette) and four red, (Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Merlot).

The 22 hectares (55 acres) of vineyards spread across the wooded slopes average forty years old, with venerable seventy year-old Grenache, and Carignan, bringing exceptional concentration to the wines. The vines are pruned short and protected by an integrated treatment policy. Yields are kept down to 40 hectolitres (420 cases) per hectare.

The name of the estate comes from the vein of red clay and limestone earth, and from its time honoured activity in agriculture, since the founding of nearby Lagrasse Abbey around 900 AD. The vineyards were established more than 100 years ago.

The see the list of Borde Rouge wines that we offer go to our Wine List.
