Vignoble Belot is located on the villages of Pierrerue (formerly created by Benedictines in the 12th century) and Saint Chinian. A beautiful view can be enjoyed on both villages from the Fontjun pass, on the road from Beziers to Saint Chinian.

The soil of the Estate is mainly calcareous clay, with a few vineyards on schists.

In the early eighties, Jacques and Gisele Belot, with three children, decided to buy some vineyards and take care of a few acres for pleasure. Jacques was a teacher, and as a housewife, Gisele had time for this hobby.

This became a passion and she decided to obtain a degree in Agriculture and become a full time wine grower. The family started to buy land in a more professional way.

1987: The family has just purchased 6.5 ha of vineyards and 5 ha of ‘ garrigue’.

1988: Uprooting of the pines and bushes, breaking of the rocks are necessary to plant new vines. People looked down smiling upon these lunatics who wanted to plant Mourvedre and Syrah. Ten years later they know they were wrong.

1991: First vintage of Chateau Belot, which gets medals in Macon and at the Silenes

1996: The Belot acquire the Chateau du Tendon, a former Royal hunting lodge. This has brought some additional work:

  • Planting of 13 ha in two years, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier, to increase the range of products.
  • Refurbishing of the wine making cellars.

Purchase of oak casks and creation of an ageing cellar.

Today Vignoble Belot sits on:

  • 22 hectares of AOC Saint Chinian with 90% Syrah, Grenache noir and Mourvedre.
  • 17 hectares of varietals with 100% of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier.

Responsibility of the Estate rests now on the shoulders of two of the children, Karine and Lionel. Harvesting is done in three weeks, after parcel selection. Wine making is Lionel’s responsibility. 100% of the harvest is de-stemmed.

Good temperature control makes it possible to master very long macerations (over 30 days for Syrah).
